Ah, Gabriel, you do not know this secret:
When my wine-jug broke it turned my head.

Ab Yahan Meri Guzar Mumkin Nahin, Mumkin Nahin
Kis Qadar Khamosh Hai Ye Alam-e-Be-Kaakh-o-Koo!

I can never walk this place again!
How quiet this region is! There are no houses, no streets!

Jis Ki Naumeedi Se Ho Souz-e-Daroon-e-Kainat
Uss Ke Haq Mein ‘Taqnatu’ Acha Hai Ya ‘La-Taqnatu’ ?

One whose despair (hopelessness) warms the heart of the universe
What suits him best, ‘Give up hope’ or Don’t give up hope!

You gave up exalted positions when you said “No.”
The angels lost face with God—what a disgrace that was!

Mere Fitne Jama-e-Aqal-o-Khirad Ka Taar-o-Poo

With my boldness I make this handful of dust rise up.
My mischief weaves the garment that reason wears.”

Dekhta Hai Tu Faqat Sahil Se Razm-e-Khair-o-Shar
Kon Toofan Ke Tamanche Kha Raha Hai, Main Ke Tu?

From the shore you watch the clash of good and evil.
Which of us suffers the buffets of the storms—you or I?

Khizar Bhi Bedast-o-Pa, Ilyas Bhi Bedast-o-Pa
Mere Toofan Tam-Ba-Yam, Darya-Ba-Darya, Joo-Ba-Joo

Both Khizr and Ilyas feel helpless:
The storms I have stirred up rage in oceans, rivers, and streams.

Gar Khalwat Mayassir Ho To Puch Allah Se
Qissa-e-Adam Ko Rangeen Kar Gya Kis Ka Lahoo!

If you are ever alone with God, ask Him:
Whose blood coloured the story of Adam?

Main Khatakta Hun Dil-e-Yazdan Mein Kante Ki Tarah
Tu Faqat Allah Hoo, Allah Hoo, Allah Hoo !

I rankle in God’s heart like a thorn. But what about you?
All you do is chant ‘He is God’ over and over!

  1. Surely ‘saaz’ (Iblis saying ‘soz–o–saaz’) means ‘singing’ or ‘tunes’, in the sense of ‘creativity’?

    1. The english translation of "Saaz o soze" is somehow differnet than what i found in the urdu dictionary "Farhang e Aasfia".

    2. yazdan in Persian mean "god of Good" in ancient Persian theology there were two gods "Yazdan" for good and "eharman" the god of evil

      so Dil-e-Yazdan means the good god meaning simply the God.

      in my opinion the Satan (and satanic system, as some modern systems claims that church got nothing to do in affairs of state) is proud that he isn't obedient to anyone in fact he is proud that he is of that high level that he is in war with the true lord.

    4. Yazdan referrs to God. Iqbal has expressed a taunt of Iblees to Jibraeel that he (Iblees) causes a pinch in God's heart while Jibraeel is only sitting and reciting God's name (tasbeeh). Throughout this poem is indicating a dialogue and an attempt to establish individual supremacy between Iblees and Jibraeel.

    6. yahaan shaitan ka almia bhi mazkoor hey.Satan is creation.Yazdaan(a persian istiara for Allah)is creator of both Jibreel and Satan.Satan is in self deceit.Satan thinks he caused concern for Allah.Allah is bey-niaaz.Satan is in a complex of being better, superior to the rest of creations as he demonstrated on the day one of Adam creation by refusing to prostate infront of Adam.Satan knowingly thinks he is the one who challenged Allah and caused concern and he is something special, where as he is on borrowed time that too he begged Allah for time till the day of judgement to mislead mankind from the path of Allah.He taunts Jibreel of being a submissive and an obedient creature and humbles Jibreel to the point of nothingness in order to make an argument for his wrong which he was destined to be so.Satan almia yeh hey keh us ki taqdeer mein he 'malaoon' hona likha tha.This is also one of his tricks to justify his situation.His hopelessness is eternal.He is on borrowed time.He can say any thing.

  11. Mukarram Alam: From my point of view the translation of above couplets should be as follows:

    Gabriel
    - O’ Old Friend; how is the world, its smell and colors?

    Satan
    - Burning-o-Suffering-o-Scars-o-Pain-o-Quest-o-Desire!

    Gabriel
    - For all the time; you exchange dialogue about extraterrestrial;
    isn’t possible; that your ragged-apron be rigged-up!

    Satan
    - O’ Gabriel; you’re not aware of this secrete;
    had made me wild-out; my broken flask of wine!

    - Now, herein; my ingress is not possible, not possible;
    how quiet this world is - without dwelling!

    - Whose hopelessness bewailed the heart of Universe;
    what suits him – Give-up hope is best or doesn’t give-up hope!

    Gabriel
    - You’ve lost glorious position by just saying “No”;
    what was angles’ position been before God’s eyes!

    Satan
    - Due to my disobedience, this handful dust risen-up;
    my confrontational costume of talent-o-wisdom stitched-with!

    - You just watch only from the shoreline; the clash of good and evil;
    who’s having spanks of storm – me or you!

    - Khizar is helpless too, Ilyas is helpless too;
    the storms, I’ve faced – oceans to oceans, rivers to rivers, winds to winds!

    - If you ever have a chance to be alone with God, ask Him;
    whose blood would’ve been given colors - the story of Adam?

    - I rankle in God’s heart like a thorn;
    you just chant – God is great, God is great, God is great!

  14. poety can not be translated. even if some one tries to translate, it does not mean that the complete depth of the stanza or peom are measured. main khatakta hun dile yazdan main kantay ki tarah ... if u will read this line again and again a new world of energy, depth and meaning will be tasted by u. what a lovely way allama adopted to address iblis by gabriel...hamdarde daireena..(mean OLD FRIEND) it means that gabriel have love and affection for gabriel.. gabriel did not address him as o satan...or evil...hamdarde daireena also deptict the passion of gabriel about satan,,,

I can not agree more.You are absolutely right.In particular Iqbal's poetry's appears to be Ilhaam,Ilqa and kashaf.It appears to carry boundless meanings.I have been praying to Allah for wisdom and and I pray to Allah to eternally keep me on this blessed path of praying wisdom and khair and nijaat and fazal and karam and all the good in this world and in the hereafter.You are right in saying that read even one line again and again and a every time a new dimension , a new meaning surfaces.

    Satan has done zulm on him itself.he became proud and refused ALLAH and ALLAH knows best that who is more superior but iblees said no and also said i ll take them away from you.
    If he would have asked forgiveness,ALLAH would have forgave him.the thing is ibless was proudy.
    And he even did proud and said ALLAH no and then saying i ll take them away.
    ALLAH ne insaan ko sab makhlooqo pr afzal bnaya.ALLAH sab se brh kr jannei wala h or jo aqal ilm or jo kuch kisi ya iblees ke paas bhi h ALLAH ki trf se h.ALLAH hi bhtr janta h kon afzal or brha h.iblees apny gharoor me inkaar kr gya or maafi bhi nhi mangi or gharoor kia.us ne apny ap pr khud zulm kia.

    Or dile yazdaan me khatkna kantei ki trha ki baat h to agr ALLAH chahe to iblees ka wajood bhi na rahei mgr us ko mohlat di gai h.or qayamat ke baad wo bhi i guess dhozakh me ho ga kyu ke wo gharoor or maghroor.jb ALLAH ek ho ba hoo ho kar baat kh rahei h phir b inkaar krna or oper se maafi na mangna or khna ke inhei ghumraa kro ga or oper se maafi bhi nhi kyu ke ALLAH se bhtr to koi nhi janta.maafi mangni chahiye bndei ko kyu ke hmei bht km ilm h.

Iqbal was a very good MUSLIM philosopher.the thing is if iblees/satan would have asked for forgiveness,ALLAH would have forgiven him but he is proudy and is in pride and said no to ALLAH.and ALLAH has knowledge of everything and more than anyone but still satan/iblees said no to ALLAH and even said that i ll take the humans away from you.Satan is humans true enemy.

    He should have asked forgiveness and said that he was wrong and he was wrong while he became ignorant.he was proudy.

    Satan would try to make you ignorant but you just have to control your nafs towards bad things and avoid satan attacking you,he will try to take you towards bad things and would try to take you to hell.

  25. If one dwells into the meaning of our creation and ponder over it the result would be as is Alama Iqbal rha as the poem ends with a logical conclusion. Let's be totally submitting as with the knowledge that we are granted we do have our limitations. What is going on the Day of judgment when iblees is not going to be blamed because in your Fitrat the difference between Good and evil was put and on top of that Prophets also came to guide you if one gets astray.

  26. Please keep one thing in mind before reading this beautiful poetry that Iblees aka SATAN once was a jin, Iblees prayed for thousands and thousands years. He was one of the favorite. Then at the height of his arrogance, he refused to do sajda before Hazrat Adam A.S which was ordered by Allah Almighty. Then he was thrown onto the earth because he asked Allah the time until Day of Judgement so he can proof that he can deviate a large chunk of people onto the wrong path.
