(Bal-e-Jibril-009) Digargoon Hai Jahan, Taron Ki Gardish Taez Hai Saqi

Dirgargoon Hai, Jahan, Taaron Ki Garzish Taiz Hai Saqi
Dil Har Zarra Mein Ghogha’ay Rasta Khaiz Hai Saqi

Contrary runs our planet, the stars whirl fast, oh Saki!
In every atom’s heartbeat a Doomsday blast, oh Saki!

Mataa-e-Deen-o-Danish Lut Gyi Allah Walon Ki
Ye Kis Kafir Ada Ka Ghamza’ay Khoonraiz Hai Saqi

Torn from God’s congregation its dower of faith and reason,
And godlessness in fatal allurement dressed, oh Saki!

Wohi Daireena Bemari, Wohi Na-Mehkami Dil Ki
Ilaj Iss Ka Wohi Aab-e-Nishaat Anghaiz Hai Saqi

For our inveterate sickness, our wavering heart, the cure—
That same joy‐dropping nectar as in the past, oh Saki.

Haram Ke Dil Mein Souz-e-Arzoo Payda Nahin Hota
Ke Paidai Teri Ab Tak Hijab Amaiz Hai Saqi

Within Islam’s cold temple no fire of longing stirs,
For still your face is hidden, veiled and unguessed, oh Saki.

Na Utha Phir Koi Rumi Ajam Ke Lala-Zaaron Se
Wohi Aab-o-Gill-e-Iran, Wohi Tabraiz Hai Saqi

Unchanged is Persia’s garden: soil, stream, Tabriz, unchanged;
And yet with no new Rumi is her land graced, oh Saki.

Nahin Hai Na-Umeed Iqbal Apni Kisht-e-Weeran Se
Zara Nam Ho To Ye Mitti Bohat Zarkhaiz Hai Saqi

But of his barren acres Iqbal will not despair:
A little rain, and harvests shall wave at last, oh Saki!

Faqeer-e-Rah Ko Bakhshe Ga’ay Asrar-e-Sultani
Baha Meri Nawa Ki Doulat-e-Pervaiz Hai Saqi

On me, a beggar, secrets of empire are bestowed;
My songs are worth the treasures Parvez amassed, oh Saki.

  9. A little variation in translation to clarify the meanings:

    IQBAL DAY, Nov 9th: Remembering one of the greatest Islamic thinkers and philosophers of all time, and my personal inspiration, Allama Muhammad Iqbal. Only Iqbal can talk about Macro and quantum physics, the precarious condition of the individual and the Ummah and the solution to our problems (Quran and Khudi/Self) in one nazm. Here is an excerpt from his book, Bal-e-Jibreel (Wings of Gabriel):
    Digargoon Hai Jahan, Taaron Ki Gardish Taiz Hai Saaqi
    Dil e Har Zarra Mein Ghogha e Rasta Khaiz Hai Saaqi
    The universe is in constant change, the stars revolve fast, oh Beloved!
    You hear the tumult of apocalypse in the heartbeat of every Particle, oh Beloved!
    Mataa-e-Deen-o-Danish Lut Gayi Allah Waalon Ki
    Ye Kis Kafir-Ada Ka Ghamza’ay Khoonraiz Hai Saaqi
    Gone are treasures of religion and wisdom of the Vanquished Pious people
    Whose Godless blood-drenched Glance is this, O Beloved!
    Wohi Daireena Beemaari, Wohi Na-Mehkami Dil Ki
    Ilaaj Iss Ka Wohi Aab-e-Nishaat Angaiz Hai Saqi
    For that age old sickness, our wavering heart,
    The Cure is that lost Elixir of Life (the Quran), O Beloved!
    Haram Ke Dil Mein Soz-e-Arzoo Payda Nahin Hota
    Ke Paidai Teri Ab Tak Hijab Amaiz Hai Saqi
    Within the heart of Haram (Islam), no fire of longing stirs,
    For your face (raison d'etre) is veiled to your own self, oh Beloved!
    Na Utha Phir Koi Rumi Ajam Ke Lala-Zaaron Se
    Wohi Aab-o-Gill-e-Iran, Wohi Tabraiz Hai Saqi
    Alas, from the land of Ajam (non-Arabs), no Rumi has risen again,
    Yet the water and soil of Iran and the city of Tabraiz (city of Rumi’s mentor Shams Tabraizi) remain unchanged
    Nahin Hai Na-Umeed Iqbal Apni Kisht-e-Weeran Se
    Zara Nam Ho To Ye Mitti Bohat Zarkhaiz Hai Saqi
    Despite the seemingly deserted land of toil (the Muslim nation), Iqbal will not despair:
    A little moisture (motivation and inspiration) and the barren field turns fertile, O Beloved!
    Faqeer-e-Rah Ko Bakhshe Ga’ay Asrar-e-Sultani
    Baha Meri Nawa Ki Doulat-e-Pervaiz Hai Saqi
    On this ascetic, bestowed are the secrets of kingship;
    The value of my Song is like the treasures King (Khusro) Parvaiz, O Beloved!
