(Bal-e-Jibril-002) Agar Kaj Ro Hain Anjum, Asman Tera Hai Ya Mera (اگر کج رو ہیں انجم, آسمان تیرا ہے یا میرا) If the stars have strayed...

Agar Kaj Ro Hain Anjum, Asman Tera Hai Ya Mera
Mujhe Fikar-e-Jahan Kyun Ho, Jahan Tera Hai Ya Mera?

If the stars have strayed—To whom do the heavens belong, You or Me?
Why must I worry about the world—To whom does this world belong, You or Me?

Agar Hangama Ha’ay Shauq Se Hai La-Makan Khali
Khata Kis Ki Hai Ya Rab ! La-Makan Tera Hai Ya Mera?

If the Placeless Realm Offers no lively scenes of passion and longing,
Whose fault is that, my Lord?—Does that realm belong to You or to me?

Usse Subah-e-Azal Inkaar Ki Juraat Hui Kyun Kar
Mujhe Maloom Kya, Woh Raazdan Tera Hai Ya Mera?

On the morning of eternity he dared to say ʹNoʹ,
But how would I know why—Is he Your confidant, or is he mine?

Muhammad (S.A.W.) Bhi Tera, Jibreel Bhi, Quran Bhi Tera
Magar Ye Harf-e-Shireen Tarjuman Tera Hai Ya Mera?

Muhammad (PBUH) is Yours, Gabriel is Yours, The Qurʹan is Yours—
But this discourse, This exposition in melodious tunes, Is it Yours or is it mine?

Issi Koukab Ki Tabani Se Hai Tera Jahan Roshan
Zawal-e-Adam-e-Khaki Zayan Tera Hai Ya Mera?

Your world is illuminated by the radiance of the same star
Whose loss was the fall of Adam, that creature of earth, Was it Yours or mine?

  2. Bother imran bichu(junnedi), In short, Its interpretation in Urdu is as below

Iss Ghazal mein Allama Iqbal ne Allah se Khitaab Kiya hai.

    Couplet/Shair 1:
yahan anjum se murad Insaan/Log hain. Iqbal kehte hain k dunya ke aksar log teri merzi par nahin chalte yani har taraf burai hai, lekin ye jahan tera paida karda hai so main tere samne sar tasleem kham karta hun. Ae Allah tu hi malik hai, Jo tu kare teri marzi.

    Couplet 2:
Ae Allah agar La-Makan mein ishq krne wale mojood nahin to ye teri hikmat hai kyun ke la-makan bhi tera hai.Yani Allah ne Farishton ki bajaye Insaan ko apni mohabbat ki doulat atta ki hai.aur ye bari fazilat hai.

    Couplet 3:
Ae Allah, Iblees (Shaitan) ne tere hukm ke khilaf kiya aur insaan ko sajda nahin kiya, lekin ye teri mashiat (marzi) ka taqaza tha ke dunya mein adam ke sath iblees ka wajood bhi kar farma rahe, tu ne hi iblees ko azadi di. Lekin teri mashiat ke samne sar-e-tasleem kham karna mera farz hai.

    Couplet 4:
Ae Allah, Huzoor Paak (S.A.W), Hazrat Jibreel, aur Quran , teeno tere tarjuman hain yani dunya walon ke liye teri hasti ka saboot hain lekin ye 'harf-e-shireen' yani Jazba-e-Ishq meri hasti ka saboot hai. yani jazba-e-Ishq aur mohabbat bhi tera tarjuman hai. Iqbak humesa Ishq ko Aqal par foqiat dete hain.

    Couplet 5:
Ae Allah, Ye dunya Adam hi ke dam se abad hai, issi ki ba-doulat dunya mein ronaq hai, agar ye insan aur iss ka jazba-e-ishq khatam ho jaye to nuksan aap ka hai. yani jamadat-o-nabatat na aap se mohabbat kar sakte na aap ke naam par sar katwa sakte, ye sirf Insaan kar sakta, yani Allah ke nam par jaan sirf insaan de sakta hai.

  3. Iqbal certianly didn't subscribe to school of thought presented above ... or else he wouldn't have be able to utter things as transgressing as this ... true beauty is that he wrapped his message in such tones that even the most hardliners couldn't find a reason to issue fatwa against him.

he was way ahead of his time ... even way ahead of our present time.

If you want to understand Iqbal, you got to travel and experience what he went through in Europe.

  4. In order to truly understand interpretation of Iqbal's poetry, one must take the trouble to read Iqbal's The reconstruction of religious thought in Islam. And I concur with the anonymous comment and respectfully disagree with interpretation presented by Iqbal Urdu Blog. In fact, most general orthodox notions and conceptions about Iqbal's philosophy are incorrect and his philosophy is misconstrued, misquoted and misused by the Pakistani theologens.

  5. I doubt Iqbal was a good Muslim. He spent too much time writing complex poetry. Qur'an is easy to read, easy to understand - God's Words. Iqbal is neither easy to read nor easy to understand - whose words?

A message delivered simply pierces the heart and sheds light everywhere. Only a few couplets of Iqbal's shairi are simple to understand, even for a layperson. That's why they are the most popular and quoted/quotable ones. The rest, he hid his meanings in. I doubt he even knew what his own mind was. He was human, after all.

These are ramblings of a man well-versed in the art of deception through language, who enjoyed stringing words together to make an effect. Nothing more. Read the Qur'an to get "roshni" and "khudi". Reading a poet-philosopher is good entertainment but will not further your understanding in life. We all get to the same place, eventually. Except for some folks, it's six feet under.

Thanks to the blog makers for making this poetry accessible to Roman-Urdu readers and neanderthals like me who need English translations. We are all losing our ability to communicate. Something Iqbal at least was good at retaining.

  6. Its not that easy to translate Iqbal. There exist a message which is in between the words. The message is in there like a soul inside a body.
